Earlier, UGC NET exam was conducted in pen & paper mode and there were three papers in UGC Net exam. Candidates had to complete ugc net paper I & paper II in the duration of one and two hours, respectively. However, according to the latest notification of UCG NET JRF exam, exam is conducted in online mode and exam pattern comprises only two papers namely Paper I & Paper II. Paper I is common for all candidates, it covers topics like teaching & research aptitude, logical reasoning, general awareness and communication technology. Paper II is based on candidate’s PG subject. Both papers of UGC NET exam is conducted in single 3 hours duration.
It must be remember that it is compulsory for aspirants to appear for both the papers in order to be eligible for JRF and Assistant Professor or Assistant Professor only. Official website of NTA informs, "The questions in paper I will be generic in nature, intending to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate." Regarding paper-II, the website informs, "This will be based on the subject selected by the candidate. All the questions of Paper–II will be compulsory."
